Boating Certificate Course

 

 

Boating Skills & Seamanship (BS&S)

Eight core lessons plus four FREE seminars makes this the best value in boating education. Complete your NY/CT/NJ boater education requirement in a one-day, eight-hour “core course” Includes the following lessons, and as many Seamanship Seminars as you’d like:

 

  • Which Boat Is For You? – Boating terms, types of boats, motors and hull designs.

  • Equipment For Your Boat – Required equipment and other legal responsibilities for boaters.

  • Trailering Your Boat - Towing, launching, retrieving, and storing your boat and trailer.

  • Handling Your Boat – Fueling, loading, docking and mooring your boat.

  • Your "Highway" Signs - How waterways are marked with lights and buoys. Basic chart reading.

  • The Rules You Must Follow – Avoiding collisions with other vessels. Keeping clear of tugboats, fishing boats, and other commercial vessels.

  • Inland Boating - Inland navigation of rivers, waterways, dams and locks.

  • Boating Emergencies - Small boat safety; personal watercraft operation; cold water dangers, carbon monoxide poisoning.

Seamanship Seminars

 

Lines and Knots for Your Boat.

Choose the right type of rope (line) for your boat. Hands on practice with the six most important knots for boaters, including the one you need to untie and tie every time you go out. Come on out for some fun as we tie ourselves and each other up with knots, bends and hitches. First MONDAY after core course. 

 

 

 

Introduction to Navigation

“Where the heck are we?” “When will we get there?” “Where are those rocks?” Learn to confidently read a compass and chart, plot your position and compute time, speed and distance to answer these and other questions from your crew.

First THURSDAY after core course.

Weather and Boating

Know before you go but be ready to deal with a blow.  Sources of marine weather forecasts, how to be your own weatherman, and what to do if you get caught in a storm.

Second MONDAY after core course. 

 

 

 

Your Boat’s VHF Radio

Language like “10-4” and “Over and out” will mark you as a land-lubber. Learn how to communicate over a VHF radio according to accepted maritime standards. Talk with friends, get help in an emergency and more.

 Second THURSDAY after core course. 

 

Seamanship Seminars are open to all and meet from 7:30pm–9:30pm on Mondays and Thursdays

Paddle Smart (OPS)

Bring your canoe or kayak to Harbor Island Park for an open-house of paddlecraft enthusiasts. FREE vessel safety check, harbor and tide charts, refreshments, display of latest gear for comfort, fun and safety. Meets on a Saturday  from 12:00 noon - 4:00 pm. Register ahead of time and get a FREE vessel ID security card.

 

 

Vessel Safety Check (VSC)

Getting your boat one of our FREE, 15 point safety inspections today can help prevent an emergency on the water later in the season. Inspections are confidential and without obligation. In addition, many marine insurance companies offer a discount to owners whose vessels pass. Call us or visit www.safetyseal.net to schedule an examiner.

Volunteer to Make a Difference!

Our flotilla is currently seeking new members and we invite you to find out about the excitement, training and fellowship that is part of membership in country’s the premier volunteer boating organization.

Who We Are

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian, volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard.  The Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all missions except military and law enforcement.  Auxiliarists also serve side-by-side with active duty Coast Guard in times of disaster.

 

What We Offer

As a member, you will enjoy top notch training in all areas of boating, as well as the fun, fellowship and rewards of community service.  There are over 21 different support areas you can choose from including communications, aviation, teaching, on‑the‑water patrol missions, and vessel safety inspections.

 

Come For A Visit

We meet the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 pm at our base in Harbor Island Park, Mamaroneck.  Call ahead and let us know you’re coming so we can welcome you by name!  Membership is open to all U.S. citizens, 17 yrs. of age and older.
